Know your Farmer.
Know your Shochet.
Keeping kosher shouldn't require placing your trust in anonymous corporate conglomerates. When you buy from Avodah Farm, you know exactly where and how your chicken was raised, and specifically who did the shechita (kosher slaughter).
Martha Black received her kabbalah as a shochetet u'bodeket for poultry from Rabbi Shlomo Zacharow of the Sacred Slaughter Institute in June 2021, after nine months of study. She is passionate about producing locally raised, locally shechted, pastured poultry of exceptional quality, and bringing openness and transparency to the process of shechita. She believes that the halacha of shechita requires stringency and strict attention to detail, but should be accessible to all, not shrouded in mystery or secrecy.
Our Cornish Cross chickens are raised on pasture right here on our farm. We feed them a wholesome diet of organic grains and kitchen scraps, and give them plenty of room to forage naturally for grass and grasshoppers, clover and crickets. They are hatched in batches of 50 and slaughtered in batches of 25. These small batches let us care for the birds properly, harvest each one at an ideal weight, and spend the necessary time on slaughter days to ensure a humane, respectful process and a clean, high quality, and scrupulously kosher product.
